Former
Yongsan Water Observatory was the first of its
kind to be established in the bed of Hangang River.
Prior to its establishment in 1917, an ordinary
observation under the title 'Ku (Former) Yongsan'
was being performed; however, with its establishment
in December 1924, followed by the official launching
of the observation activities in January 1925,
Former Yongsan Water Observatory effectively enabled
scientific and modern observation of the water
levels. Although it was closed due to water level
changes in 1977, the Observatory continued until
September 1976. Nevertheless, it seems as though
observation had once been halted during the political
disruption period from 1945 following the liberation
and through the Korean War. As an independent
structure, it is a unique treasure.
